Microsoft Windows 11 gives you a breath of fresh air with a raised interface. The buttons and context menu facilitate one-touch interaction throughout the operating system. But what if the touch screen stopped working in the first place?
Fix Touch Screen Not Working on Windows Laptop
Windows 11 not detecting touch inputs on your laptop can lead to an unwanted experience. Fortunately, you can follow some solutions to fix touch screen not working issue in Windows 11
1. Remove the thick screen protector
We often apply 2-in-1 screen protector, such as Surface Pro, which has touch screen. If you use a screen protector to prevent the screen from getting scratched, it may not register touch inputs accurately due to the thickness of the protector.
If other screen protector users report the same problem, you’re probably not the only one having problems with touch input. Remove the screen protector and find another option that isn’t too thick to properly register touch inputs.
2. Clean your screen
Particles of grease, dirt, or dust on your screen can lead to touchscreen issues as well. If possible, try using a microfiber cloth instead of any random material around the screen to remove any dust from the screen.
Use only approved screen cleaners, not those meant for cleaning glass surfaces at home. Next, allow the screen to dry and try using a touch screen.
3. Turn off and activate the touch screen
Using the Device Manager menu, you can turn off the touch screen and enable it again to check if that helps.
Step 1: Right-click on the Start key and select Device Manager to open it.
Step 2: From the Device Manager window, expand the Human Interface Devices list.
Step 3: Find “HID compatible touch screen” and right click on it.
Step 4: Select Turn off device from the context menu. and confirm it.
Step 5: Again, right-click on the same option and select Activate device.
Restart your computer and see if the touch screen is working.
4. Reinstall touch screen drivers
Corrupt HID-compliant touch screen drivers may have corrupted the touch screen functionality on your laptop. You need to reinstall the required drivers and try again. Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Press the Windows key and search for Device Manager.
Step 2: Press Enter and open the menu. Expand the Human Interface Devices section and right-click on the “HID Compatible Touchscreen.”
Step 3: Select Uninstall device and confirm your decision.
Restart your computer and the operating system will install the required drivers during the restart process.
5. Download updates from PC manufacturer
OEMs like HP, Dell, Asus, and Lenovo ship their laptops with built-in software to install needed updates, modify hardware settings, check system properties, and more.
You can open the OEM app on the laptop and install pending updates to fix touch screen problems. In the example below, we’ll show you the HP Support Assistant app.
Step 1: Open the HP Support Assistant app.
Step 2: From my dashboard, go to the list of updates and install the pending updates on the laptop.
6. Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter
Unfortunately, the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter is not available from the Windows Settings menu. You need to run it using Windows Terminal. Let us show you how.
Step 1: Right-click on the Windows key and open Windows Terminal.
Step 2: Type “msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic”, then press Enter.
The operating system will launch the hardware and hardware troubleshooter and fix touch screen problems.
7. Touch screen calibration
If the touch screen suddenly stops working on your laptop, you will need to calibrate it from the Control Panel menu.
Step 1: Open the control panel on your laptop.
Step 2: Change the View option to Category.
Step 3: Select Hardware and Sound.
Step 4: Scroll down and find Tablet Settings. Click Calibrate Screen for pen or touch input.
Step 5: Select Calibrate from the following menu.
Step 6: The operating system will ask if you want to calibrate pen input or touch input. Select touch input.
Select the intersection whenever it appears on the screen and complete the process.
8. Let the laptop cool down
After long and heavy working hours or gaming, the laptop screen may get annoyingly hot when touched. If the temperature of the laptop is too high, the screen may not register touch input properly.
Let the laptop cool down for a few minutes.
9. Windows 11 Update
An old Windows 11 build can cause problems with the touch screen on your laptop. Head to Windows Settings and go to the Windows Update menu. Install pending updates and you are good to go.
